A bit about myself:
Fitness and sporting have been lifelong passions of mine. I’ve been an avid racing cyclist for 37 years, and extreme physical challenges and adventure have always captured my imagination.
In the 1990s, I developed an interest in Triathlon and was lucky to be able to train and compete full time. I’ve completed various Ironman Challenges around the world, which consist of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride, a 26.2 mile run.
My passion for fitness, coupled with my interest in travel and adventures led me into high altitude mountaineering, which again allowed me to travel and explore the world.
Between 2003 and 2009, I attempted the Seven Summits — the highest mountains on each of the world’s seven continents, including Mount Everest in 2009 (which I only narrowly failed to summit) and Mount Vinson, deep in Antarctica.
I’ve been a Personal Trainer and Physical Therapist for over a decade now, and at 55 years old I have as much enthusiasm and passion for fitness as ever. I continue striving to improve my performance, and now focus entirely on doing what I love most — cycling.
Why I became an Ambassador of Unbownd?
I was first introduced to the brand by Mark Harris, Unbownd's Head Coach and as a Personal Trainer and Physical Therapist I was very interested in the concept of compression wear with integrated postural support.
I tested the clothing extensively both in the gym and outdoors, including on my bike and running. I was struck immediately by how effective the clothing is at supporting key parts of the body, particularly the knee and shoulder joints.
The compression wear allows complete and unrestricted movement whilst providing support to core joints, and the effect of the clothing on post exercise recovery was very noticeable. I was confident from the start that these products were so different from anything I’d tried before and I was happy to recommend them to my own clients.
With a personal commitment to fitness and my academic background being very scientific, the Unbownd range of compression wear impressed me that much that I wanted to become an Ambassador for the brand. Plus, the possibility of being involved in the development of new innovations is very exciting
What does it mean to me?
Wearing Unbownd’s compression wear means that I have the confidence to push myself that bit harder during training, without fear of injury.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about joining the Unbownd tribe?
Go for it! Seriously, I am very hard to impress but Unbownd clothing really delivers.
What is your favourite Unbownd item and why?
The range of compression wear. It’s very high-quality technical wear which delivers noticeable improvements both on performance and recovery. The postural support is particularly great for long distance cycling and has enabled me to squat ‘heavy’ again.
What keeps you determined to push through when things get tough?
It’s a big part of my character. Tough times come to an end and pain is only temporary. But regrets last forever, so don’t quit! Commitment is key and even if I don’t feel motivated on a particular day, my commitment stays strong and I’m always glad I pushed through.
My favourite and least favourite exercises?
Cycling is and always will be my favourite. Lunges are traditionally my least favourite exercise.
Words I live by?
Always be yourself. Express yourself. Have faith in yourself. Don’t go out and look for a successful personality and try to replicate it (Bruce Lee).
